Westpac has put a number on what AI did for one of its biggest technology projects.
The Sydney-headquartered bank budgeted $70 million to migrate the legacy St.George data warehouse into Adapt, its cloud data and analytics platform built on Microsoft Azure. It now expects the job to cost about $35 million.
How AI helped
CEO Anthony Miller said AI tools sped up three parts of the work:
- converting old code
- testing
- writing documentation.
The migration finished more than two years early. The old warehouse is due to be switched off in FY27.
What Westpac gets
The bank expects about $15 million a year in direct benefits from FY27. It also says it now has a reusable AI data migration capability for future projects.
The migration is part of Unite, Westpac’s program to simplify its technology.
