Canva will cut or relocate 1,271 roles, about 22% of its workforce.
Co-founder and chief executive Melanie Perkins told staff that Canva’s growth had slowed for the first time in a decade. She pointed to fast-moving technology and changing user expectations, and said small adjustments would not be enough.
What is changing
- One product organisation. Product, growth and platform teams will merge into a single group, with fewer layers of management and more combined roles.
- Hubs. Some staff will have their roles changed or will be asked to move to centralised hubs.
- Support for departing staff. People leaving will receive at least six months’ salary, and healthcare will continue for 12 months where Canva provides it.
The bigger picture
Canva was founded in Sydney in 2013 and now has teams in 37 countries and hundreds of millions of users. Earlier reports said the company had lowered its expected revenue growth from about 30% to about 20%.
